Terms of service

Version 2026-09-02. Plain-language summary first, details below.

Thands connects you with people whose past experience has been document-verified. What they share is personal experience — it is not legal, financial, medical, immigration, or any other professional advice, and you act on it at your own risk.

Payments. You pay the price shown on a profile; there are no added buyer fees. If a question is not answered within 48 hours of payment, you receive a full refund.

Verification. We review documents against the specific claims an expert makes, then delete the documents. A verified badge means the stated claim matched an official document at review time — nothing more, nothing less.

Conduct. Misrepresenting your experience, submitting forged documents, or attempting to move transactions off-platform results in removal and forfeiture of pending payouts.

Payouts. Experts receive 80% of each completed exchange. Payouts are processed after the answer is delivered and the refund window closes.

What you write here, and what we may do with it. You keep ownership of everything you write. By posting a claim or answering a question you grant Thands a worldwide, perpetual licence to use that text and the record of its verification — to run the service, and to include it in de-identified datasets that we license to third parties for research, evaluation, and AI training. De-identified means your name, email, and any direct identifiers are removed before a dataset leaves us. Your uploaded documents are never included: they are deleted after review and only the fact of verification remains.

You get paid for that too. When Thands earns revenue from licensing a dataset that includes your contributions, contributors receive 50% of the net licence revenue, divided in proportion to how much of that dataset each person contributed. This is separate from, and on top of, the 80% you receive on each exchange. If we ever want to attach your name to a contribution rather than de-identify it, that takes your separate, explicit permission.

You can say no, and nothing happens to you. Tick the dataset opt-out on your profile and your contributions are excluded from every dataset built from that moment. You keep your verified badge, your placement, your price, and your 80% — opting out changes none of them. You can switch it back on or off whenever you like. We will never rank you lower, hide you, or pay you less for opting out, and we will not ask you again after you decline.

What a licensee may never do.Every dataset licence we sign carries these terms, and a breach ends the licence. A licensee may not attempt to re-identify you or link your contribution back to a person. They may not resell or redistribute the dataset. And the data may never be used for advertising or ad targeting, credit scoring, insurance underwriting, hiring or tenant screening, immigration enforcement, law enforcement, or surveillance of any kind. Research, model evaluation, and model training are the permitted uses. Nothing else.

You can see what happened to your work. Your dashboard lists every dataset your contributions went into, when it was licensed, what kind of organisation took it, and what you were paid for it. If that page is empty, no dataset containing your work has been licensed.

We do not change this quietly.Your account is bound to the version of these terms you accepted, and that version is stored with your record. If we ever widen how data may be used, it applies only to people who accept the new version — we will ask, and silence is not agreement. Anything you contributed under an older version stays under that version's rules.

Your experience stays yours. We do not ask for exclusivity over you. Answer the same question on a blog, in a forum, for a competitor, or in a book — that is your right and we will not restrict it. What the licence above covers is narrower: the specific text you wrote on Thands and the verification record we produced. Those two artefacts you agree not to license to another party for dataset or AI-training purposes.

Leaving. You can withdraw your profile at any time and we stop using your contributions in new datasets from that point. Datasets already delivered to a licensee cannot be recalled, and revenue share on those continues to be paid to you.
